VIRR Level 2 Daily Outgoing Longwave Radiation Product from FY-3B.

Abstract:
VIRR(Visible Infrared Radiometer) L2 Daily Outgoing Longwave Radiation Product is the thermal radiative energy emitted into the outspace by the earth-atmospheric system at the top of atmosphere.It's magnitude is highly related to the temperature of the emitting surface. It is one of the three components that determine the earth radiation budget at the TOA. The OLR product of FY-3B is estimated from the channel 5 temperature of VIRR by a regression equation developed through radiative simulation and regressive analysis. The product is projected onto global longitude/latitude grid with a resolution of 0.01°.Both daytime and nighttime OLR are included in one daily product data file. OLR is widely used in climate model and climate diagnoses.

    • VIRR/FY3B L2 OLR Product is produed with VIRR L1 data.In processing software a highest and lowest OLR thresholds as well as channel temperature thresholds were set. The quality of the OLR product was validated by comparing with that of NOAA-18 AVHRR. The root-mean-sqrare errors of monthly average OLR of VIRR were 3-4W/M2 in 2011 when compared with that of NOAA-18.
