AVHRR Polar Atmospheric Motion Vectors Climate Data Record Release 1 - CIMSS Algorithm – Metop-A

Abstract:
Tropospheric satellite winds at all heights below the tropopause in the polar regions (latitudes higher than 65º), derived from the infrared channel of the Metop AVHRR instrument. This is the first release of polar atmospheric wind vectors that have been reprocessed. They are archived in the EUMETSAT Data Centre. The data record was generated with an adapted version of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) operational algorithm. The data record includes products generated with IR images taken from the AVHRR/3 imager on-board the Metop-A polar satellite. The dataset covers the period March 2007 until December 2014. The coverage boundaries are polar caps polar wards of 65º. The data record is available in two formats, i.e., the EUMETSAT generic EPS format and the BUFR format. Note that this polar AMV dataset has also been produced using the EUMETSAT operational algorithm (see : Related Product tab). This is a Thematic Climate Data Record (TCDR).
