Data Collection and Retransmission
Abstract:
The Meteosat Data Collection Service (DCS), currently supported by Meteosat at 0° and IODC, is one of the core services operated by EUMETSAT in support of meteorology and weather prediction. The service enables Data Collection Platform (DCP) Operators to use the Meteosat system to relay environmental data collected from DCP platforms equipped with certified DCP Transmitters. A Data Collection Platform (DCP) can be any measurement facility, such as an automatic weather station or an ocean buoy, which collects environmental data through instruments/sensors. The instruments/sensors can measure different environmental parameters, such as wind speed, direction, rainfall, water level, temperature, seismic activity, fire index parameters, etc. The DCP Transmitter allows for the automatic retrieval of data from the DCP, which can be particularly advantageous for data collection in remote locations and inhospitable locations where it may provide the only possibility for data relay.
The EUMETSAT DCS currently supports both standard-rate (100bps) and high-rate (1200bps) DCPs. EUMETSAT no longer assigns new standard-rate (100 bps) DCPs. The high-rate (HRDCP) has improved capabilities and can be used for application such as warnings of potentially devastating natural phenomena such as tsunamis.
DCP data re-transmitted via the Meteosat satellites are routed for onward delivery to users via EUMETCast, the DCS Web Service and to the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) community.
