Data Collection and Retransmission

Abstract:
One of the functions of the system of geostationary meteorological satellites is the collection of environmental data from Data Collection Platforms (DCP). DCPs are automatic, or semi-automatic, in-situ environmental observing systems, which may be integrated into an automatic weather station, an automatic river or tide gauge, or placed on an aircraft, ship, balloon or buoy. The Meteosat Data Collection System (DCS) enables DCP Operators within the footprint of the satellite to use the Meteosat system to retransmit those DCP data via the Meteosat satellites for onward delivery to users via EUMETCast, Download and to the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) community. The Meteosat system supports both standard (100bps) and high-rate (1200bps) DCPs from MSG, allowing for improved capabilities and warnings of potentially devastating natural phenomena such as tsunamis. The DCS is particularly useful for the collection of data from remote locations where it may provide the only possibility for data relay.
